First Duke of Leeds

Article abstract: The heir of a distinguished Royalist family from Yorkshire, Sir Thomas Osborne, Duke of Leeds, became one of the leading politicians of his day. He is regarded as one of the founders of the political faction that evolved into the Tory Party. He was a staunch defender of the monarchy and its prerogative as long as they did not threaten the Church of England and the basic rights of the English people. In many ways he set the pattern for politicians who followed in the next century.
