Article abstract: As Doge of Venice from 1193 to 1205, Enrico Dandolo presided over the Republic of Venice and founded its commercial, colonial, and maritime empire in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. He was the outstanding leader of the Fourth Crusade, 1201-1204, and played the key role in its diversion from the Holy Land to Constantinople.
