The site of El Tajín, located in the tropical lowlands near Papantla, in northern Veracruz, Mexico, is one of the most important centers of Classic and Early Postclassic period civilization in the Gulf Coast region. With its principal occupation dating from between 600 and 1100 c.e., El Tajín served as an important center of commerce and a focus for ceremonial activities based on the Mesoamerican calendar, ritual ball games, and human sacrifice. The site is currently revered by the Totonac Indians.
