Article abstract: McMillan discovered the first transuranic element, neptunium, and was codiscoverer of plutonium, an artificially made element which is fundamental to nuclear power and nuclear bombs. He also discovered the important principle of phase stability, which made possible the high-energy accelerators of the late twentieth century producing fundamental advances in man’s understanding of the nature of matter.
