Early Life

Edwin McMasters Stanton, born on December 19, 1814, in Steubenville, Ohio, was the eldest child of a physician descended from a Quaker family. When Stanton’s father died, the thirteen-year-old had to leave school to help support his family. He worked in a local bookstore and continued his education during his spare time.
