Early Life

Edwin Lawrence Godkin was born in Moyne, Ireland, on October 2, 1831, to Sarah Lawrence and James Godkin. The elder Godkin was a Protestant clergyman, journalist, and political activist of some note, a prominent figure in the Irish independence movement.
