Article abstract: Through delegating responsibility but maintaining control of his holdings, Scripps established a publishing empire that eventually included newspapers, the United Press Association, Acme Newsphotos, and the United Feature Syndicate. Late in life he founded, with his half-sister Ellen, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the Scripps Foundation for Research in Population Problems, and the Science News Service.
