Corps and Corps System

The term “corps” sometimes refers to a military organization composed solely of officers, or of officers and enlisted men (as in the United States Marine Corps). Otherwise, it means a ground combat unit consisting of two or more divisions (for example, tactical units larger than a regiment or brigade, usually composed of 12,000 to 20,000 men and commanded by a major general) and other troops. Divisions are formed into a corps for the conduct of a military campaign.
