Clyde Warrior was raised by his grandparents, who gave him a traditional Ponca upbringing. His first language was Ponca, and from his youth he was immersed in traditional Ponca life. By his late teenage years he was an accomplished powwow fancy dancer. He knew many old Ponca songs as well as many traditional songs of other Native American cultures.
