At 1:23 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 1986, a major accident began at Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station about 100 kilometers northwest of Kiev. Over the next nine days, tremendous amounts of radioactivity and radioactive debris were released, endangering tens of thousands of people in the Soviet Union, Northern and Western Europe, and perhaps the whole Northern Hemisphere....
