Article abstract: Military significance: As chief of military intelligence from 1948 to 1950, Herzog played an important role in the survival of Israel during the Israeli War for Independence and its aftermath.

Chaim Herzog was born in Belfast, son of the chief rabbi of Ireland. In 1935, he immigrated to Palestine. In 1939, he enrolled at Cambridge University; he later attended the University of London, earning a doctorate of law.
