Chaco Canyon is the site of some of the finest ruins in the United States and is an example of the zenith of pre- Columbian Pueblo civilization. Located in northern New Mexico, the canyon is roughly 10 miles long and a mile wide, surrounded by sandstone cliffs and traversed by the seasonal Chaco River. Within the area are located six large pueblos—Pueblo Bonito, Chetro Ketl, Una Vida, Peñasco Blanco, Hungo Pavi, and Kin Bineola—and many smaller towns connected by a network of roads.
