Probably born at Narbonne, in southern Gaul, Carus rose through the ranks to become the praetorian prefect of the emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus. When he led a rebellion with those forces stationed in the provinces of Raetia and Noricum in September, 282, the troops serving under Probus at Sirmium mutinied and killed the emperor.
