Summary of Event
From 1492 to about 1534, the exploration of the New World was almost the exclusive domain of Italian sailors. When England and France contested the Spanish and Portuguese monopolies, they employed John Cabot and Giovanni da Verrazano, both Italians. During the 1530’s, however, Italian explorers were replaced by other nationals. As soon as Cabot’s report of the marvelous shoals of fish he had observed off the coast of Newfoundland...
