Summary of Event
On October 22, 1938, Chester F. Carlson, assisted by Otto Kornei, succeeded in making the first copy by an electrostatic process. The text of this first, dim copy was simply “10-22-38 Astoria,” commemorating the date and the location of the event in Astoria, New York. Little did the two men know that their invention would lead to a multibillion dollar industry.
