Article abstract: Canonicus kept the Narragansetts at peace with the British colonists for the twenty-seven years between their arrival in 1620 and his death; he befriended Roger Williams, giving him the land on which stands present-day Providence, Rhode Island.
Canonicus shared the leadership of the Narragansetts with his nephew Miantonomo at the time of English arrival.
