To reduce German pressure at Verdun and to prevent the transfer of German troops to the Somme battlefield after July 1, Russian general Aleksei Brusilov mounted an offensive in Galicia against the Austro-Hungarians, led by General Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf, on June 4, 1916.
