Article abstract: Military significance: For two centuries, the British were almost constantly involved in subduing native peoples in some part of their empire.
In 1600, Queen Elizabeth I founded the British East India Company and gave it a monopoly for all trade with India. For the next 150 years, it competed with Portuguese, Dutch, and French rivals. In the 1750’s, the company, led by Robert Clive, asserted itself militarily.
