Early Life

Elizabeth “Betsy” Griscom was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 1, 1752. She was the eighth of seventeen children of Samuel and Rebecca Griscom and part of the fourth generation of Griscoms in America. The Griscoms lived on Mulberry Street (now Arch Street), near Fourth Street, and Samuel was a well-known carpenter.
