Napoleon Bonaparte created the Confederation of the Rhine (July 12, 1806) to bring the plethora of German states under French control. Emperor Francis II disbanded the Holy Roman Empire (August 6). Prussia, under King Frederick William III, resisted Napoleon, but mostly without allies, except for a few Saxon states and, nominally, Russia.
