In 1756, the nawab of Bengal, Sirāj-ud-Dawlah, captured Calcutta and imprisoned British troops in the infamous Black Hole. Britain responded by sending Lieutenant Colonel Robert Clive to recapture Calcutta, which he did on January 2, 1757. He signed a treaty with Sirāj-ud-Dawlah but expected it would not last.
