In the early spring of 312, Constantine the Great declared war on Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius and invaded Italy. In three hard-won victories, at Segusio, Turin, and Verona, he defeated Maxentius’s main forces. Thereafter, Constantine marched on Rome and placed the capital under siege.
