Battle of Marathon

Article abstract: Type of action: Ground battle in the Greco-Persian Wars. Result: Successful defense of Athens by Greek forces.

This battle took place between the Athenians and their allies, the Plataeans, and elements of the Persian army on a narrow, undulating plain. The Athenian generals debated strategy because they feared the possibility of a seaborne attack as well as an overland invasion against their city. Miltiades argued for an immediate march against the Persians, and the polemarch, or war archon, Callimachus, agreed.
