On June 25, 1876, the Seventh U.S. Cavalry under command of Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer suffered one of the worst defeats in U.S. military history when approximately 1,800 Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho repelled the soldiers, killing all 210 men under Custer as well as about 90 other troopers, Indian scouts, and civilians.
