In 371 b.c.e., a Spartan army led by King Cleombrotus invaded Boeotia, seeking to prevent Theban dominance over the region. The Spartans met the Theban army under Epaminondas on the plains of Leuctra. Cleombrotus arranged the Spartans in a shallow crescent formation, twelve ranks deep across the battle line.
