France collected a force of 30,000 French and Irish soldiers for a descent on Ireland, and Paris dispatched orders to the fleet to cover the invasion. Admiral Anne-Hilarion de Cotentin de Tourville’s fleet, ultimately totalling 44 ships of the line, was to be augmented by a squadron of sixteen ships of the line from Toulon.
