On June 13, 1807, after Russian cavalry ejected a French hussar regiment from Friedland, General Levin Bennigsen decided to cross the Alle and overwhelm Marshal Jean Lannes’s smaller force. Lannes informed Napoleon fifteen miles away, then concealed sharpshooters in a wheatfield and nearby woods and positioned the rest of his approximately 10,000 men to advantage, as Bennigsen spent the night moving six divisions across the river....
