After their defeat at Arginusae (406 b.c.e.), the Spartans sent Lysander to Asia Minor, where he rebuilt his fleet and restored his forces’ morale. Lysander then sailed to the Hellespont to block ships bringing south Russian grain to Athens and to deal with the towns in the region, which had deserted Sparta and rejoined Athens. Taking one of them, Lampsakos, he made it his base.
