Baron Menno van Coehoorn’s military career began at the age of sixteen with a captaincy in his father’s infantry regiment. He served in the infantry but sought fame as a military engineer. In 1685, he published Nieuwe Vestingsbouw (new fortification), a controversial work attacking methods favored by the French.
