Originating in Mongolia, the Avars conquered and mixed with the Uighurs, a Turkic tribe, about 461. After defeats by other Turks, they moved into the Volga steppes of southern Russia, where they conquered the Bulgars, Antes, and other tribes who had controlled that area after the collapse of the Huns.
