The Athapaskan language family is spoken by a small number of people spread out over a very large area. The origins of this language group are obscure, since none of the tribes speaking Athapaskan languages had developed writing before the arrival of European settlers. There is some evidence, however, of a relationship to native languages spoken in Siberia.
