Born into ancient nobility, Anne, duke of Montmorency, was a childhood companion of Francis I. When Francis became king in 1515, Montmorency was raised to a cavalry command. He fought at Marignano (September 13-14, 1515) and Pavia (February 24, 1525), being captured at the latter battle.
