Article abstract: Tupolev was among the world’s leading designers of military and civilian aircraft. He worked in the Soviet aircraft industry for half a century and designed more than 120 planes, many of which have held world records for being the heaviest, fastest, or largest built. He was first in the U.S.S.R. to build all-metal aircraft, was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R., and was a recipient of many state prizes.
