Article abstract: Aalto was one of the founding fathers of the so-called International Style in architecture, but he went beyond the geometrical cubism that was the hallmark of the International Style by incorporating into his mature work classical and Romantic elements. In the process, Aalto became not only Finland’s most famous architect but also a national hero, even the symbol of the Finnish ideal of sisu (fortitude).
