Alexander General

Article abstract: Alexander General worked with anthropologists to promote understanding of traditional Iroquois beliefs and the cause of Iroquois nationalism.

Alexander General was born on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, in 1889 and given the name Shao-hyowa, or “Great Sky.” Previously a faithkeeper, in 1917 he became the principal speaker for the Upper Cayuga Turtle Moiety at the Sour Springs longhouse. He was elevated to a confederacy chieftainship in 1925 and received the title Deskahe.
