Son of Ottavio of Parma and Charles V’s illegitimate daughter Margaret of Austria, Alessandro Farnese was born into an aristocratic mercenary family. As a child, he was sent to Philip II’s court to guarantee his quarrelsome father’s loyalty. Lieutenant to Don Juan de Austria, Farnese fought brilliantly against the Turks at Lepanto in 1571.
