Aircraft Carriers

A naval vessel designed to carry and to facilitate the takeoff and landing of aircraft. It is distinguished by its flat upper deck, or flight deck, which serves as a runway. While experiments with aircraft carriers in the form of modified cruisers were conducted during World War I (1914-1918), the first true aircraft carrier, the USS Saratoga, was built in 1925. By 1942, aircraft carriers had superseded battleships as the backbone of modern naval fleets.
