“Adobe” comes from the identical Spanish word, which in turn is taken from the Arabic word attoba, meaning “the brick.” Adobe bricks are made of clay and straw mixed with water and dried in the sun. The word can be used to describe the bricks themselves or the clay or soil from which they are made, as well as the mortar sometimes made from them and the structures built with them.
