Article abstract: Military significance: As the leader of Algerian resistance to French colonialism between 1833 and 1847, Abdelkader earned a reputation as a fierce fighter and an even better organizer.
Abdelkader was chosen as the leader of the tribal resistance against the French in 1833; he organized resistance by founding alliances in the western province of Oran. From 1832 to 1839, he extended his power over much of northern Algeria, subduing hostile ethnic groups and organizing resistance in the countryside.
