Article abstract: Abahai consolidated and then expanded the empire begun by his father, Nurhachi, and established the foundations for Manchu rule over China during the Ch’ing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Early Life

Abahai (also known as Hung Taiji) was the eighth son of Nurhachi (1559-1626). Little is known about his early youth, but apparently as a teen he impressed his father with his fierce courage and intelligence. By the beginning of the 1600’s, Nurhachi had created a unified Juchen political state and originally intended that his son Cuyen succeed him....
