In the Tan's Rules of the Game essay, what is the significance of the story's title? Could the title be applied to more than one game?

It should be applied to the game of chess, which Waverly masters during this section. However, it can and should also be applied to life. This is underscored when Waverly imagines herself playing chess against her mother. Waverly's trying to learn to play the game of life, and experiences her mother as her opponent (when her mother thinks they are on the same side).
