Was there any indication earlier in the story "A Rose for Emily" that would forshadow the outcome of the iron-gray hair?

Posted by amy-lepore on Monday September 29, 2008 at 8:41 AMYes. If you carefully go back through the story, you will notice that William Faulkner was wickedly clever in his crafting of the story. He mentioned several times how Miss Emily and Homer Baron were seen riding alone through town, how he was always around, and then suddenly he wasn't. No one seemed to know what happened to him. Miss Emily was buying poison around that time, and then there was the lime incident where the men creeped along at night through her yard spreading the lime so they could get rid of the stench. In addition, she purchased a man's toiletry set and had them engraved. All of these items were found in her room in addition to the iron-gray hair on the pillow. A careful reader will note these things the first reading through, but most of us will need to take a more focused look to find the hints that are so craftily embedded within the story.
