Homer left for about a week while Emily's relatives visited in the hope of convincing her to end the relationship with the Yankee bachelor. After the relatives left, Homer returned one evening, but then was never seen again. Emily did not appear in public for six months following the last sighting of Homer, though she was seen at her window the night that the concerned townspeople sprinkled lime around her house to get rid of "the smell." Emily eventually grew fat and her hair turned grey. She was rarely ever glimpsed again, although she resorted to giving china painting lessons for six or seven years in order to make ends meet. After that, her taxes were abated, and the front door
...remained closed for good... Thus, she passed from generation to generation--dear, inescapable, impervious, tranquil and perverse.
