The breaking down of the door symbolically represents several different ideas in William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily." First, it reveals the awful secret that she had to maintain for so many years. Through the hair on the pillow, it also illustrates the love, though terribly misguided, that she felt for Homer Barron. The destruction of the door also shows that an old era has ended in Jefferson and that a new one has begun; the younger generation who for so long had had yearned to understand Emily's actions had finally entered her world.
