This description leads the reader to believe the house has a strong personality. The house is the last left in the old neighborhood. It sits among cotton gins and gas stations. By using personification, it seems the house itself exerted its personality by being both stubborn and charming in its refusal to go away, to be the last house standing.
There is a sense of pride in the house being "an eyesore among eyesores".
