A Rose for Emily

I've always wondered what became of Tobe.  He is a fascinating character to me and I've posed the question many times to my students about what Tobe might have done after walking out of Miss Emily's house and onto a new life.  What do you think became of Tobe after he left Miss Emily's house for the last time?

He moved up north and became a stand-up comedian.  Emily's story was at the top of his list as fodder for his routines.

I want to believe he ended up on some tropical island, sipping margaritas. :o)

Remember the description of the filling stations and urbran sprawl around Miss Emily's house? Who do you think owned them? She never had any company, so she'd never miss the silverware and china!

This is the beauty of Faulkner. I love how he weaves left over characters and facts into other stories. Just as Colonel Sarotris makes his cameo, characters wander in and out like thread keeping the quilted stories together. I do not believe Tobe appears anywhere else, but it fun to think about.
