They are both very affluent and wealthy in the city, and both are equally trying to put the other in its place. The feud has been going on forever and no one can really remember what it's about...it is so fierce that even the servants of each family "feud" with one another.
This poses a problem for Romeo and Juliet whom we meet later since they each belong to one of the families. They are born each other's enemy, yet they are in love. This is the crux of the entire play.
