How can the "Romeo and Juliet" factor be adjusted for our contemporary society?

Because in the play, it led to the death of two youths both of whom their families loved. And today, we still have similar effects which give rise to the same end.

I think the easiest connection, and the one made in both "West Side Story" and the DiCaprio/Danes version of "Romeo and Juliet", is that of gang warfare.  In society today, gangs are still fighting each other in much the same way.  For reasons that seem unclear, they pit against each other and violence occurs.  And, as happens in the story, violence begets violence.  Each act leads to a retaliation, which leads to more violence.  I've included a link to a Washington Post article that gives some details, and shows the existence of this type of "war" in many parts of the world.  I've also included a link to an enotes discussion group that discusses the relevancy of the story.
