Although Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy, there is an element of comedy throughout the play that helps alleviate the intensity. Juliet's Nurse, for instance, serves as comic relief. She discusses crude topics and takes no notice when she makes others feel uncomfortable. Mercutio also offers comic relief. His punning humors Romeo and the audience, especially the Queen Mab speech. He also foils Romeo. Mercutio's bawdy discussions of sex, for example, and his witty and light-hearted use of language contrast sharply with Romeo's romantic view of love and his gloomy lovesickness.
