In the famous "balcony scene" of Act II, Juliet proves to be more tentative, patient, and mature in her approach to love than her suitor. While Romeo has already declared his love for her and attempts to swear to his passion "by yonder blessed moon," Juliet interrupts him, saying,
"O, swear not by the moon, th' inconstant moon, / That monthly changes in her circled orb, / Lest that thy love prove likewise variable."
Juliet is aware that Romeo is moving quickly and is more concerned that their relationship should stand the test of time. She is smitten with Romeo, but would rather that their "bud of love" slowly bloom into a "beauteous flower" that will not wilt.
